Biirdie – Estelle

I can already say that the new Biirdie album, Catherine Avenue, will be on my top five list of favorite albums of the year in 2008. As one of my favorites bands that I listened to during high school, no band gave me as much joy and did as much damage to me later on as they did. There are bands that you want to listen to when you’re happy and there are bands you want to listen to when you’re in the worst of moods – they were a band that I wanted to listen to at both times and really any times in between.

Glorious Noise’s review to their 2005 album, Morning Kills The Dark, pretty much sums up my thoughts to their debut album: “Not since Pet Sounds have I heard a pop album with so much orchestrated gorgeousness, so much emotional and aural appeal, so much genuine sentiment. If that classic Beach Boys album is a symphony to God, Morning Kills the Dark is a symphony to life. And it’s no less powerful to behold…a magnificent debut.”

I had high hopes that their next album will be as good as their debut album and from the songs that I heard from it on Trace My Face, from their MySpace, and the fact that you can stream the whole album on their website, I can safely say that it most likely will surpass my high hopes, if it hasn’t already. It’s incredible. If it were released this year, it would be on the top of my list, passing M.I.A.’s new album which currently holds the #1 spot.

To those who want to hear their debut album, you can also stream the whole thing on their website. It’s at the bottom of the page.

Also relevant and important: on their MySpace, it looks as though they too have a cover of Malvina Reynolds’ Little Boxes which makes me think that it may be on Weeds this season. I hope so!
